The Heritage Railroad is comprised of 11.5 miles of mainline, spurs and sidings formerly owned by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). It was leased to the Heritage Railroad Corporation (HRC) in 1997 pursuant to DOE’s Reindustrialization Program. HRC was a private, not-for-profit corporation, a subsidiary of the Community Reuse Organization of East Tennessee (CROET) – the entity authorized by Congress to Reindustrialize (redevelop and utilize) the former DOE Gaseous Diffusion Plant (K-25), over 1,200 acres of industrial property now known as Heritage Center. A right-of-way perpetual easement and all non-realty assets were transferred to HRC in 2001.

UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP
In 2009, Heritage Railroad Corporation was acquired by Energy Solutions, LLC, headquartered in Salt Lake, Utah. Energy Solutions continues to operate Heritage Railroad as a common carrier. Heritage Railroad is an STB-sanctioned short line operating under the regulatory cognizance of the Federal Railway Administration. It is no longer affiliated with DOE.
